Celebrating the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with Service

Students from our local public school system had the day off today in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and my fantastic neighbor Heather suggested that our families set aside a part of the day for a service project.  Wanting to do something meaningful, but simple, we decided to organize a drive to collect non-perishable food items, coats and other winter clothing, and cell phones.  The food and clothes are headed to my neighbor's church for their free food pantry and clothes closet.  These two services are open to any community member in need and many of the recipients of assistance are from a nearby apartment complex used by the INS for refugee housing.  The cell phones are on their way to another friend collecting old phones to help raise money for their school.

The food and clothing collected here will soon make its way into the hands of people who will truly benefit from it.

It seems appropriate to end today's post with MLK quotes used in the thank you notes we left for friends and neighbors who contributed to the drive.  Happy Monday, friends - in love, peace, and service!

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.  You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love."

"The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious."

~Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. Oh, so lovely! A wonderful way to celebrate this special day. I was nearly brought to tears to hear his serman on "Drum Majors" on the radio this evening. I wish my state would honor the holiday by letting the students have it off. I may petition.
